Ive noticed a trend, especially in the NPoCP threads in which people seem to have a rabid disdain for wheels that aren’t OEM. I get that a lot of aftermarket wheels are heavy and not very durable, but seriously folks it’s not a big deal on most daily drivers.

It’s all about how it looks; I’m also not paying more for a car because you think your shitty taste in rims makes your car more valuable

Most of the hate is because they are ugly. At least 90% of the time.

Agreed!! On a DD, it’s okay to have whatever wheels fit your taste.
Personally, I enjoy the fact that TSW makes wheels for smarts.

I like these - clean, simple design, not showy or gaudy. This is a great aftermarket wheel.
The kinds of wheels I hate are those really silly dished wheels that have those stupid stud looking things on the rim circumference. I’m not sure what you call them but I fucking loathe those kinds of wheels, they look tacky, idiotic, and stir up an irrational amount of rage and disdain within me.

Eh. In some cases it’s an upgrade.
I’ll take aftermarket aluminum @ 11 lbs over 25 lb steel all day long

As long as the price of the car is reasonable it doesn’t matter much to me. IMHO rims are like any other mod, doesn’t increase the value.

Rims should look OEM or OEM+. Most people’s choices (and most rims made) don’t really fit this criteria.
In the case of that Juke, they took the car from “Only Perseus could find a way to look at it” to “Obamanotbad”
You can’t go wrong with 5-spokes in general. IMHO.

I almost went with a set of TSW Nurburgrings myself. The only thing was they didn’t have the exact size I wanted.

Reasonable and people don’t match when it comes to selling cars. People seem to think their worn tires and used rims that they spent $800 for a year ago add value to a car still.

I guess what I’m referring to is like a 15 year old BMW priced at 5k with non stock rims. Not a deal breaker to me.

Yeah that I could probably go with...but people who dump $1000 on rims and tires on a 90’s civic and expect it to make it a 5k car are what sadly take over the web

I’m with the naysayers on the cheapo ones, but I’m quite happy with my lightweight forged aluminum aftermarket wheels thank you very much.

I really dislike most aluminum wheels. There’s only handful of wheel designs that I would like to buy for my car. And I’m not just talking about aftermarket wheels as most OEM wheel look horrible too.
And even though some designs look really nice they only look nice in certain sizes and under certain cars. Most wheel designs tend to look really silly when the diameter goes to “modern sizes”.
If I forget the looks and only think about quality I would prefer OEM wheel over cheap aftermarket wheels. But higher quality and more expensive aftermarket wheels are still the best.
So usually steel wheels are my choice.

This is the swap I made. I think there may be a 14 spoke available from Ford. But it’s a big change from my OEM.

when in relaity it just means the new owner will have to spend an extra 100 dollars, or more, on tires because now they’re buying 17,or 18” low profiles instead of a normal 65 sidewall 15.

I’m not sure quite what you’re describing, but a lot of really excellent lightweight aftermarket wheels are three pieces held together by a whole bunch of stud bolts, and thus, yes, have a bunch of studs around the circumference. They may not be everyone’s cup of tea but at least they’re functional.

Yeah it’s that kind of wheel. I did say my disdain for them is irrational, but now I know that those studs at least have a function.

90% of aftermarket wheels look terrible. For whatever reason they stick out so bad, they’re easy to spot from 10 miles.
I don’t know if it’s the lip, the rim, or what but they’re usually ugly and obvious.

I’m sure there are cheapo aftermarket rims that have fake studs BECAUSE FAST N FURIOUS YO, and that shit would drive me up the wall for sure. The real ones aren’t exactly sleek but they do have a purpose. I like mine (posted in another comment around here) but I can certainly understand why someone might prefer “cleaner” designs for aesthetic reasons.

They’re often ugly/tacky/gaudy/ill-fitting/heavy. I think that’s the main issue. If they’re quality wheels that fit and don’t weigh more than stock, I have no issue with aftermarket.

Someone else's taste is not your own. I know I prefer a blank slate because I have very exact desires for what I would want to mod a car with.

For me as long as the OEM come with it, there isn’t a problem. Wheels are like any other appearance item; they’re incredible subjective. What may look good to you, can be hideous to others. Not only that but frequently people aren’t buying top of the line wheels, and there is a question of longevity. Its not a dealbreaker for me, but if they're aftermarket, they had better be conservative.

We bought my wife one 2 years ago and she absolutely loves it. It gets around pretty good in 3 inches or less of snow as well since it’s AWD and has good allseasons on it. It’s decently zippy? peppy? zeppy? in sport mode and it handles pretty well too.
I like it but I’d like to add some more boost and take it autoxing at some point haha.

I don’t think its hate for aftermarket wheels in general, rather that a large number of them seem to be tacky and overstyled. Same with lots of aftermarket head units.

BBS style wheels look nice under many cars. Those probably aren’t real BBS wheels and this example also has replicas (of BBS LM). They do look identical and I wouldn’t know unless the link had told me that they were replicas.
But under my Charger they would look really silly. The only aluminum wheel that look nice under any car seems to be Schmidt TH-Line wheels. Actually they aren’t completely aluminum as the outer lip is stainless steel (smaller ones also have similar in the inner side).

I like those Schmidts. Also, you’re right that the wheels in the picture I posted “probably aren’t real BBS wheels”—but nor are they pretending to be like the (admittedly good-looking) car with replicas you posted. I know, because it’s my car. You know there are a bunch of companies other than BBS with their own designs, brands, and decent wheels, right?

Yeah. BBS style is really popular among wheel manufactutrers and some look totally identical but some have some own design too. Here’s one model that is offered by one local company. They don’t seem to pretending to have much own design. It’s called 885 LeMans.
